VISION

The Department of Defence Studies has a clear vision to become a Centre of Excellence in the field of national security studies in the Central India. It aims to achieve this by promoting rigorous research and generating alternative and innovative national security discourse through an interdisciplinary approach. The department also interacts with various stakeholders, such as policymakers, armed forces personnel and the civil society for collaborative dialogue and knowledge exchange. This interaction allows us to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical application, ensuring our research and teaching remain relevant to the evolving security landscape. By facilitating these conversations, we contribute to informed policy decisions and a deeper understanding of national security challenges.

Furthermore, the department is committed to providing students with a comprehensive education in defence and security studies. Our vision extends beyond academic knowledge, aiming to equip students with the analytical and strategic skills necessary to navigate the complexities of the contemporary geopolitical environment. Through rigorous coursework and practical exercises, we empower students to critically assess national security threats, understand the intricacies of national interests, and comprehend the roles of the armed and paramilitary forces. This holistic approach prepares our graduates to become informed and engaged citizens, capable of contributing meaningfully to India's security and foreign policy discourse. We strive to cultivate a new generation of leaders who possess the knowledge, skills, and ethical grounding to serve the nation effectively in an increasingly interconnected and challenging world.

MISSION

The department's mission centers on fostering a profound comprehension of the armed forces, extending beyond mere operational knowledge to encompass their strategic importance within the national framework. We aim to equip students with a robust foundation of theoretical and practical skills, enabling them to excel in the competitive landscape of military and related public service examinations conducted by both the Union and State governments. This involves a rigorous curriculum that delves into the intricacies of national security, defence strategies, and the operational dynamics of various branches of the armed forces. Furthermore, we emphasize the development of critical thinking, analytical abilities, and effective communication skills, all of which are essential for success in these demanding examinations.

Our approach integrates contemporary case studies, simulations, and expert lectures, providing students with a holistic understanding of the challenges and opportunities within the defence sector. By nurturing a sense of duty and instilling the values of integrity and leadership, we prepare our graduates to not only pass examinations but also to serve as exemplary officers and public servants, contributing meaningfully to the nation's security and development. We are dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in defense education, ensuring our students are well-prepared to meet the evolving demands of national service.

SWOC ANALYSIS

Strengths: The department's strength lies in its exceptional resources, beginning with a team of highly qualified and experienced faculty members, dedicated to providing students with a comprehensive education. Complementing this expertise are well-equipped laboratories, facilitating practical learning and research across various disciplines. The department also houses a substantial library, offering a wealth of academic resources, and a unique museum that serves as a valuable educational tool. Its infrastructure supports a nationally recognized level of Naxal research, showcasing its commitment to academic excellence and specialized study. This combination of resources and expertise creates a robust environment for students and researchers.

Weaknesses: A significant constraint on the department's research expansion is its limited faculty. With only one permanent faculty and two guest lecturers, the department faces a shortage of teaching personnel. This scarcity directly impacts the capacity to undertake and manage extensive research projects, hindering the department's potential for growth and development in its research endeavors.

Opportunities: The department benefits from a well-qualified faculty, ensuring high-level academic expertise. Coupled with a well-stocked library containing ample books and journals, the department possesses strong resource foundations. This combination of highly educated staff and comprehensive library access creates a solid base for both teaching and research activities, demonstrating a commitment to academic excellence. Hence We can say that our  Resources is Good.

Challenges: A primary challenge is low awareness of the subject among students and parents in Chhattisgarh State. This is compounded by its absence in school curricula.  the only department in Chhattisgarh dedicated to Defence & Security Studies education.  Consequently, advocating for its inclusion in school education is a key objective. Increasing visibility and demonstrating the subject's relevance are crucial for attracting students and fostering its growth.

Action Plan For Next Five Years

A crucial element of the department's strategic vision involves expanding the reach and impact of defense studies within the state. This entails actively advocating for the introduction of the subject into secondary and higher education curricula, thereby fostering early awareness and interest among students. Furthermore, a significant objective is the establishment of a dedicated peace research institute. This initiative, envisioned in partnership with the University Grants Commission (U.G.C.) and various state government agencies, will serve as a hub for interdisciplinary research on conflict resolution, peacebuilding, and regional security. This institute will facilitate scholarly exchange, host international conferences, and contribute to informed policy recommendations. The major action plan for next five years is  "Strategic expansion of Defence Studies programs across Chhattisgarh's universities and affiliated colleges, coupled with the development of enhanced research facilities, is a key departmental priority."

Another Action Plan of the department for the next five years are:

Faculty Development & Expansion: Address faculty shortage and enhance expertise.

Research Enhancement: Secure external funding for research projects, publish research findings in reputable journals and policy briefs, organize national and international seminars and workshops and Expand the research areas to include cyber security, and other modern threats.

Curriculum Enhancement: Review and update the curriculum to incorporate contemporary security issues, establish internships and exchange programs with defence organizations and think tanks, Organize guest lectures by experts from the armed forces and policy circles and Work to introduce the subject into secondary school education.

Infrastructure Development: Upgrade laboratory equipment, expand the library's digital resources and databases, develop the museum into an interactive learning space and secure funding for infrastructure improvements.
