Department of Geology : At Glance

The Department of Geology, established in 1956, stands as the oldest and most prestigious geology department in the state. With a strong legacy and commitment, our vision is to emerge as a centre of excellence in Earth Sciences, driving innovation through advanced curriculum, modern research, and sustainable utilization of Earth’s resourcesWe proudly carry the responsibility of nurturing students from across the state, offering them not just education, but a gateway to careers in geology, geoscience research, and mineral-based industriesOur Postgraduate program, initiated in 1967, has been carefully designed to blend theoretical knowledge with practical exposure, ensuring our students are well-prepared for the future. Our mission is clear — to produce skilled, industry-ready professionals and researchers who can meet the growing demands of mineral, energy, and natural resource sectors, while contributing meaningfully to the sustainable development of society.

ACADEMIC COURSES -

The Department of Geology offers the following academic programmes -

U.G. Course : The Department offers Bachelor's degrees in three subject combinations: Physics, Mathematics, and Geology (PMG); Chemistry, Botany, and Geology (CBG) & Chemistry, Zoology, and Geology (CZG). Each combination has an intake of 30 students, for a total program capacity of 90 students.

P.G. Course : The Department offers a 2 years M.Sc. (Geology) Program with an intake of 25 students. Students are offered a range of courses in the M.Sc. program focusing on various domains in the field of Earth Science

Vision of the Department of Geology

To establish the department as a centre of excellence in Earth Sciences.

To provide an advanced and industry-relevant curriculum aligned with modern trends in geology.

To promote innovative research for sustainable and optimum utilization of Earth’s resources.

To nurture skilled geoscientists and professionals who can serve academia, research, and industry.

To uphold the legacy of being the oldest and pioneering geology department in the state.

To contribute to the state’s mineral-based industries and natural resource management.

To encourage interdisciplinary collaboration for solving environmental and geoscientific challenges.

Mission of the Department of Geology

To impart quality education and practical training in geology and allied Earth sciences.

To produce competent and industry-ready professionals for mineral, energy, and environmental sectors.

To foster research and innovation addressing Earth resource management and sustainability.

To equip students with modern tools and techniques such as remote sensing, GIS, and geophysical methods.

To create awareness about environmental conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.

To collaborate with industries, research organizations, and government agencies for mutual growth and societal benefit.

To build a strong academic foundation that inspires students to pursue higher studies, research, and global careers in Earth sciences.

Action plan for next five years (Based on SWAC ANALYSIS):

  1. To meet out the shortage of research lab and lecture rooms it is essential to provide two class rooms for UG and PG Students and a research lab for research scholars.
  2.  For strengthening the knowledge of geology, expert lecture will be invited from alumni.
  3. Recruitment of teaching and supporting staff is essential. It should be brought into the notice of the state Govt
  4. Available facilities of qualified staff equipped lab, instruments would be utilized for consultancy.
  5. Funds for various activities would be generated by consultancy student fee collection, alumni, Jan bhagidari samiti Rusa and ISR.
  6. There are several mineral based industries, and mineral resources present in the Chhattisgarh state so there are lot of opportunity to get the job for our students.
